The World Press Freedom Index is an annual report compiled and published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and defending freedom of information and freedom of the press around the world.
The report ranks 180 countries based on their level of press freedom, taking into account factors such as media independence, transparency, pluralism, legal framework, and abuses and acts of violence against journalists. The ranking is determined by a team of experts who gather and analyze data on media freedom in each country.
The latest World Press Freedom Index was published in April 2022 and covers the period from January to December 2021. According to the report, the global situation for press freedom worsened in 2021, with authoritarian regimes cracking down on independent journalism and the COVID-19 pandemic further restricting access to information in some countries.
Norway, Finland, and Sweden topped the 2022 ranking as the countries with the greatest level of press freedom, while Eritrea, North Korea, and Turkmenistan were ranked at the bottom. The United States was ranked 45th, down five spots from the previous year, due in part to the harassment and arrest of journalists covering protests and the presidential election.
